MTB Field Trip

Out of the city, out of the closet

An all-inclusive, educational adventure for the LGBTQ2SIA+ community

Intro to Mountain Biking Field Trip

June 1-2, Turkey Point Provincial Park

Applications close May 6, 2024

What’s included?

  • Professional Instruction: Coach Sena Porter is a seasoned competitor and coach at the national level. She will lead the group through safety and skills over the course of two days.

  • Food & Beverages: Field Trip participants will be provided with at least three nutritious meals during the trip (lunch, dinner, and breakfast). We just ask that everyone chips in to help prepare and clean up.

  • Transportation: We’ll work out how to get you and your bike there. Our goal is to carpool when at all feasible in order to reduce our carbon footprint. We will ensure that those providing rides receive a transportation stipend to help cover expenses.

  • Bikes, if needed: We want this to be an opportunity for people who have cycled but may have never ridden a MTB to give it a try. So, we’ve partnered with Dismount Bike Shop to provide a MTB *FOR FREE* to anyone who needs one for the weekend.

  • Camping gear, if needed: We’ll be car camping for this adventure. If you’re not familiar that means we’ll be driving up to the campsite and be within metres of our vehicles. We recognize that not everyone has camping gear and we will help organize what you need, if that’s the case. Also, due to the regulations of the campground people will likely have to share tents in to order accommodate our party’s size.

Who is this for?

Where is the Field Trip going?

Turkey Point Provincial Park

  • Turkey Point is located within a reasonable driving distance to many cities in Southwestern Ontario.

  • There are dozens of kilometres of beginner-friendly MTB trails nearby.

  • The #FillThePodium program will be returning to Turkey Point in October for two Substance Projects MTB races. This is a great opportunity to pre-ride some of the course. In that vein, #FillThePodium MTB riders’ Field Trip applications will be given special consideration.

What does this cost?

$0 for participants. Our goal is to provide all essentials for the weekend for the approximately 10 participants. This costs us about $250 per person not including donated items. The Field Trip is funded in part by ParticipACTION, the Government of Canada, and individual donors. If you’d like to contribute, we’ll be holding a fundraiser with some awesome prize packages soon!

Note: TBD We may have space for additional at-cost participants, meaning They Cycle will coordinate their participation and charge a fee that covers a portion of the expenses.

What’s beginner-friendly?

Safety is our highest priority. We assume you can ride a bike but have no knowledge of mountain biking. We begin with safety skills before proceeding to any other skills. We do not expect a high level of physical fitness. We also aim to provide an atmosphere that’s kind and open where you can be who you are on the inside, in the outside.

On the left a green check mark is over mountain bikers high fiving on a flat road. On the right a red x is over a mountain biker flying off a jump.
